DNA artspace is pleased to feature Pre-paid Paradise, Thin Horizon a solo exhibition by London based painter Heather E. Carey. This exhibition stems from Carey’s playful approach to depicting distinct spaces or objects and integrating them into one picture plane; a theme Carey has been exploring in her practice since moving to London four years ago. The work grew from the simple idea of depicting a painting within a painting or a sign within a sign, resulting in hybrid constructions that toy with our perception of time and space. This non-linear perspective of space relates to utopian thinking in which the past and the future tie into the present. Carey’s paintings are informed by what she experiences in her surroundings such as the signs, parks, and architecture in the city. She holds a particular interest in advertising billboards, which have a dominant presence in London. To the artist, billboards have the ability to mirror the position of paintings as objects. Both can have a physical presence in the landscape, provide pictorial representations of subjects, and contain concepts of desire. The hybrid quality of these works relates to the ambiguity of memory and the architectural history of a place.
