Exhibition Dates: April 25 - June 3, 2015
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 25, 7-10pm
With a focus on textiles, Surfacing comprises a new body of work that refers to surface design, as well as “bringing to the surface.” Many of the works presented are reconstructed from the artist’s archive of past projects and materials: paintings become printed fabrics, sculptures become quilts, costumes become sculptures, and pieces of clothing become canvases. Along with new paintings and resurfaced objects, these transmutations bring together Jamie Q’s ongoing themes of craft and repurposed materials, money and value, gender and queerness, and process-based play.
Jamie Q makes paintings, drawings, zines, prints, sculptures, and textile pieces. They have shown their art and distributed their zines internationally, including notable group shows at Krets Gallery in Sweden and at the Luggage Store Annex as part of the National Queer Arts Festival in San Francisco. Museum London and Michael Gibson Gallery featured their work locally in the group exhibitions L.O. Today and Not Bad For London. The artist has also presented solo exhibitions at Art Metropole in Toronto and at Parentheses Gallery & Art Projects in Halifax. Jamie Q holds a BFA from the Alberta College of Art & Design (2002) and an MFA from Western University (2010). Originally from Edmonton, via Calgary and Montreal, they currently live and work in London, Ontario.
